Published April 28, 1983. Next week, May 5-7, the Second Annual Marriage, Home and
Family Conference will be held at Brigham Young University. The general public
is invited to the conference, which is being sponsored by the College of Family,
Home and Social Sciences, The Family Living Center, and the Department of
Conferences and Workshops at BYU. The meeting is being held in the new Harmon
Conference Center directly east of the Marriott Center parking lot.
Registration for the conference begins at 12 noon on
Thursday. Dr. Lynn Scoresby will give the keynote speech titled “Family
Miracles.” During the remainder of Thursday afternoon, all day Friday, from 9
a.m. to 5 p.m., and Saturday from 9 a.m. until noon there will be a total of
45 different one-hour presentations on marriage, home, and family life. We had
a great crowd last year and anticipate an even larger one this year.
This year I specifically requested that we have a special
series on marriage throughout the three-day conference. Several faculty agreed
to participate among whom are Bob Stahman who will talk on “Your Marriage
Personality and Environment,” Reed Bradford on “Love: The Divine Definition,”
and Hugh Allred on “The Birth Order Factor in Marriage.”
Spencer Condie will talk on “Becoming One Flesh: The Quest
for Marital Intimacy,” Boyd Rollins will give a presentation on “Interaction
Process in Marriage and Parent-Child Relations,” and yours truly will give
three lectures, on each day, on “Marriage as the Focal Point of the Family,”
“Love Never Faileth,” and “Initiating Change in Marital Relationships.”
There will be numerous other talks on family life and related
topics during the three-day conference. Among them: Rita Edmonds will address
the topic “The Single Adult in the Family and Society,” Paul Robison will
tackle the subject of “How to Put Your Foot Down So Your Child Won’t Step On
It,” James Harper will also talk about “Interactional Rhythms in Family Life,”
and Barbara Wheeler will speak to the topic of “Your Children Are Not Your
Children.”
Samples of other talks to be given at the conference include
one by Leslie Feinauer who will speak on “Inter-generational Family Concerns
When the Elderly Live With Their Adult Children.” Margaret Hoopes will address
the topic of “Friendships in the Extended Family,” and “Estate Planning
concerns for Families” will be discussed by Kay Edwards.
Roger Coplen and James MacArthur will give a three-day
series on “Developing a Healthy Self-Image,” Tim Davis will talk on “Home
Orchards: Fruit Tree Pruning,” and Bill Love will speak on “Cooking, Plain but
Fancy.”
